Federal grant aims to close the gap in students’ literacy skills caused by pandemic
Dr. Alyson Collins, associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to conduct research that will improve the writing skills of students with disabilities and those at risk for disabilities. The research project is designed to address challenges many students faced when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted classroom learning.

idza luhumyo Graduate student wins prestigious international literary prize

Idza Luhumyo, a student in Texas State’s MFA Creative Writing program, has been awarded the AKO Caine Prize for African Writing, an annual award for the best original short story published in English by an African writer. Her short story, “Five Years Next Sunday,” is an incandescent story of a protagonist “who is ostracized and yet holds the fate of her community in her hair.” She is the first TXST student to win the prize.

Texas State is one of seven U.S. colleges and universities featured in a new report from Excelencia in Education, a national authority on accelerating Latino student success. The organization lauded TXST for “progressing beyond (degree) completion to meet the needs of the nation’s economy and develop strategies and practices that more intentionally serve Latino students.”

Two grants from the U.S. Department of Education will equip programs at TXST to serve more low-income students who would be the first in their families to earn degrees. Upward Bound provides students instruction in literature, math, science, and foreign language, plus mentoring and support as they prepare for college entrance exams and tackle admission applications and financial aid forms.

christa oliver Harvard seminar shines spotlight on dance as form of activism

TXST dance professor Christa Oliver attended a Harvard University performance research seminar for the second year in a row and led a workshop about dance as a form of activism. Scholars, practitioners and teachers from around the world learned choreography she created in the performance, “If We All Rise Up.”
