Student Spotlight

Our diverse and talented alumni network is comprised of more than 209,000 Bobcats, who, as Texas State students, used their innovative ideas and tenacious spirits to make our campuses better places every day. We are especially grateful to the undergraduate and graduate students who work with the Alumni Relations team to bring you a variety of engagement opportunities. As they wrap up their semester, we want to give you a look behind the scenes and introduce you to the amazing future alumni who help to make our programs possible.

FROM THE NEWSROOM

Inspired by the story of Dr. Paul Phillips III (B.S. ’77) and his family's history, Dr. Nicholas Herrmann is using ground-penetrating radar and magnetometry to map the plots, markers, and unmarked graves of the Black cemetery on the outskirts of Fredericksburg.

Texas State's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is supporting the 1 Million Cups program to foster local startups. Entrepreneurs, innovators, funders and other interested community members are invited to attend free networking events on the last Wednesday of each month from 9-10 a.m.

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences has elected Naomi Shihab Nye, professor of creative writing, as one of its newest members. She is among 250 people chosen by the American Academy this year, and the first ever elected from Texas State.

Bobcats in the Wild

Jason Wiersema (B.A. '97)

Jason, a forensic anthropologist who serves as the director of forensic anthropology and emergency management at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, is driven by opportunities to tell the stories of those who can no longer speak for themselves. He and his colleagues formed the Texas Mass Fatality Operations Response Team, which provides statewide, 24/7 assistance to local jurisdictions within the state that become overwhelmed after mass fatality incidents. His experience with mass fatality response includes the excavation of mass graves in Bosnia, and the identification of victims of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. New Fountain at Ring Celebration

On May 7 and 8, the Texas State Ring Celebration returns to the Meadows Center for an in-person commemoration of this Bobcat milestone. Plunging your Official Texas State Ring in San Marcos River water is an important part of the ring tradition, and this year we're unveiling a NEW fountain so Bobcats can take the plunge in style. Be sure to follow us on Instagram to be among the first to see it revealed.

Applications Due May 25

The New Venture Development Competition at Texas State is returning for a third year, and this year alumni are invited to pitch their business concepts. Winners will receive up to $20,000 in non-dilutive startup funding, space at STAR One, Texas State's technology incubator, and mentorship from our entrepreneurs-in-residence.

CAMPUS PULSE

Texas State Supports COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts

Texas State and Hays County Local Health Department partnered for a mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic on April 22, during which more than 2,400 people received vaccines. Numerous members of the Texas State community supported the event, including faculty and students from St. David's School of Nursing, who have been assisting with vaccine administration at various local clinics throughout the semester.
